Real Racing 2 HD update might just make you get an AV adapter for your iPad 2

Apple's demonstrations may not have exactly made its Digital AV Adapter seem like a must-have accessory for the iPad 2, but the folks from Firemint may well change your mind with their upcoming update for Real Racing 2 HD. Not only will it let you output full 1080p video instead of just mirroring the iPad 2's display (and aspect ratio) on your TV, but it will even let you use your iPad 2 as a secondary display -- in this case, to display a map of the track. Unfortunately, there's no word on a release date for the update, but you can get a pretty good taste of what's in store in the video above.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

The mobile app marketplace is exploding; there are now hundreds of thousands of apps on the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app markets. Heck, even Windows Phone 7 just crossed the 10,000 mark!

We don't necessarily mean the latest craze; we'd like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

So, what are some of these apps? Bonus points for links to screenshots in the comments!

Google keeping Honeycomb source code on ice, says it's not ready for other devices

Itching to put some sweet, crunchy AOSP Honeycomb on your hardware of choice? You might have quite a wait, as BusinessWeek reports that Google will not release the Android 3.0 source code in the near future, and we just received confirmation of the same. Google forwarded us the following statement, which pretty much says it all:
Android 3.0, Honeycomb, was designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes and improves on Android favorites such as widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customization. While we're excited to offer these new features to Android tablets, we have more work to do before we can deliver them to other device types including phones. Until then, we've decided not to release Honeycomb to open source. We're committed to providing Android as an open platform across many device types and will publish the source as soon as it's ready.
It's fairly clear that the company's motivation here is the same as it's been all along -- Google wants to restrict Android to the devices it was designed for. Though the company long insisted that earlier versions of Android were not for tablets, manufacturers quickly adapted the source code to slates anyhow, and we can imagine the company wasn't thrilled some of the middling results. At that time, Google's only weapon was to deny access to Gmail, Maps and Android Market, which it did liberally (with a few exceptions to the rule) but this time it sounds like it's simply withholding the "entirely for tablet" source code instead of sending cease-and-desist letters out. Another explanation, however, could just be that Honeycomb's not ready for primetime without some OEM help -- last we checked, smartphone support was a far cry from final, and even the finished Motorola Xoom still has a few software kinks to work out. Here's hoping a nice cold bowl of Ice Cream will smooth things over with the open source community before long.

Facebook Is Reading What You Write to Sell Ads. Live. [Wtf]

Ugh, you know, I love Facebook, but sometimes it's really frustrating how the targeted ads aren't relevant enough to me and my consumer lifestyle. Like, yeah, I enjoy pizza and videogames, but couldn't it be more precise and creepy? Yes. More »

XXX top-level domain finally approved, 300,000 domains already reserved

.XXX domains by ICM registry
After 7 years of rigorous back-and-forth mass debating over the creation of the .XXX top-level domain (TLD), ICANN has approved its introduction. You can reserve domains through its sponsor, ICM Registry, and .XXX domains will cost at least $60 to register once they become available in the next couple of months.

Don't get too excited about securing a money shot domain, though: at the time of writing 296,000 domains have already been reserved. You can still go ahead and attempt to pre-reserve a domain, but you will be forced to enter a closed auction with all other interested participants -- and you can guarantee that you'll be bidding against some companies with very deep pockets. Owners of existing TLDs (.com, .net, etc.) can also jump to the front of the queue, which means you're unlikely to get your sticky hands on any thrilling domains.

The interesting thing about the introduction of this TLD is the inclusion of Rights Protection Mechanisms, which let adult (and non-adult) companies block their trademarks from being registered. Apple, for example, can (and will) reserve apple.xxx and ipad.xxx. These locked pages won't forward to apple.com either; they'll simply point to a non-porny holding page. Any companies wishing to block domains will have to pay a one-time fee per domain, though.
